Acne

Acne is not just a condition found in teenagers. Many people in their 30s and 40s can continue to suffer with this condition. No matter what age a person is, acne can have a devastating effect on a person’s self-confidence. Unfortunately acne can also be a difficult condition to treat , and one that is prone to recurrences.

Although the underlying cause of acne is multifactorial, there is one underlying triggering factor. This factor is blockage of the follicle or pore. Blockage occurs when dead skin cells and debris combine with the skin’s natural oil to form a comedone. This comedone is commonly referred to as a blackhead or whitehead. Once this plug of material blocks the pore, the natural oil begins to back up behind the blockage, leading to a small cyst in the skin. This is the typical pimple.

As the cyst continues to enlarge in the dermal layer of the skin, inflammation and infection can occur. This results in a red, tender and pus-filled lesion. Eventually if the cyst ruptures , scarring can occur in the dermal layer of the skin. Picking or squeezing the skin can also increase the risk of rupturing the cyst and stimulating scarring.

At Cosmetique Solutions, Dr Regli uses a multifaceted approach to treat acne. Each step in the progression of acne needs to be addressed in order to best treat the condition. A topical skin care system called Clear Action is specifically designed to remove and prevent blockage of the pore. Sometimes oral antibiotics and other prescription medications are required if infection is present.

A number of bacterial species ( eg. Proprionbacteria acnes & Staphyloccoccal epidermidis) have been linked to acne. These bacteria produce substances in the skin called porphyrins. An Intense Light source in the UV wavelength band is able to target the porphyrins and kill off the bacteria . The Ellipse Flex Intense Pulsed Light System at Cosmetique Solutions uses this wavelength band to treat acne. It is also helpful in treating the small red marks left on the skin after acne has settled.

In summary, acne has many components and treatment involves a multiple therapy approach.
